For some reason I cant stop listening to these guys!  The first time that I heard them was on an episode of “Gossip Girl” and they truly blew me away. The distinct voice of the lead singer is really what caught my ear in the first place. He sounds a bit tortured and shaky but he gives their music a unique sound.

Another song that I’m currently playing to death on my ZUNE is “Raise the Dead” by Phantom Planet I dig their sound too but I just found out that they are on an “indefinite hiatus” I guess I’m too little too late. But I’ll continue to keep my ears open for new stuff…. Keep it Moving….

I used to Rage against the MACHINE……Until the MACHINE gave me a raise and a PROMOTION….NOW I’m part of the MACHINE….And I kinda like it!!!

This is the music of my generation! When I hear this song it makes me think of the 70’s, it has a catchy Disco beat. This band certainly has a style all their own.!The quirky lead singer reminds me of a young Gloria Gaynor aka The Disco Queen for some odd reason. Is disco being revived? I hope so

Is it just me or are all my favorite songs and singers coming from the U.K? Estell? Amy Winehouse? Adelle? I see a trend…..

This is actually a topic that many people wonder about. I’ve never actually seen what a lice (lices?) looks like. But I hear horror stories from my Caucasian friends about them, and from what I hear they are pretty nasty. AA’s don’t get them for a few reasons:

Hair type of black people prevents head lice: While lice in Africa have adapted to curly hair with a flat hair shaft, American lice have many other options. According to the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources website, “Head lice found in the United States prefer hair that is round in cross section. Hair that is ovoid in cross section, such as the extremely curly hair of African Americans, is not as attractive to lice that are adapted to round hair shafts.”

Grooming of black hair prevents head lice: As a child whenever a letter came home that there was head lice at school, the boys in my family would get a haircut, (close to clean shaven), and the girls would have their hair straightened. My mom said for the boys, it gave the lice nothing to hold on to, and for the girls she said no lice could survive a hot comb. (A metal comb heated on the stove used to straighten hair, much like a flat iron but with teeth). Many black people apply heat to their hair on a daily basis to smooth out the kinks and curls, making it a hostile environment for head lice.

Hair products black people use prevents head lice: Because African American Hair looks best when saturated with oils and conditioners, head lice cannot survive. Hair strands are slippery to the lice and the glue used to lay eggs does not stick.

Apparently all the Isoplus I’ve been using paid off! Don’t ever say the TSS isn’t an educational Blog…….

I’ve never done IT!

IT being giving my 2 weeks notice when I leave whatever place of business I happen to be at the moment. And come to think of it I don’t think any of my friends bother giving any kind of notice when they leave their employ either.

Why is this?

I’ve given it some thought and have come up with a few ideas.My First theory involves why I personally don’t leave notice. In my case if I’m working at a particularly dissatisfying place I feel that if I spend another minuet there I will go crazy. In not happy one bit and my only thought is to blow that popsicle stand and find a place that will lift my spirits and give me a sense of peace. Hence why I only hang up two family pictures and have one plant so that when I do leave it will be quick and easy, because to me there’s nothing worse or more obvious then me lugging a huge box out to my car.

My Second theory involves Technology and the fast pace with which this world is moving. I think that with Monster and CareerBuilder making it extremely easy to apply for positions the popular opinion is that if we do happen to leave we can replaced rather quickly! How many of us have walked off a job muttering to ourselves “They’ll find someone else to do my job, I’m out” We believe just that. Put an ad on Craigs list and in two day’s our EX employer will have an influx of new candidates..Simple…. Wrong! What you don’t know is that when you leave without notice you leave a GAP in the organization a huge gaping hole tha’s left unfilled, work that’s unfinished, projects not completed. You may think that your job was insignificant and that you won’t be missed or that your absence wont be noticed but we notice especially after your work has to be passed on to everyone else. Not to mention the money that will be lost in having to hire and train a new person to do your job. Not to mention benefits for the new hire, company cell phone, etc the list goes on and on needless to say its a pricey situation.

Giving notice was a courteous gesture that allowed your soon to be EX employer time to train and pump you (the soon to be EX employee) for information that that the new hiree will be able to use to do their (your) job properly. To be quite honest with you this is a dangerous trend that I would like to see my generation veer away from. So Lets try to keep classiness and good business practices alive and leave with our heads held high not slinking out the back door….

Something Needs to Change!

I’ve been away…….. mentally! So much has been going on that I haven’t had a chance to update my blog. But never fear I’m never far away. There are a few new developments in my life:

1) Decided that its time for me to move on and start fresh with a new me, not that I don’t love the current Cici but I think I’m getting sidetracked from my real goals.

2) Ever single? Maybe changing soon

3) Turning over a new leaf. I’m extremely self centered and I realized that I find more joy in helping others, than with focusing all my attention inward ,when I put my mind to it….

4) I want to write a book! (more on that later)

And that about sums its up! I’m going on a journey to find myself, we’ll not really to find myself I don’t think I’m lost but I’m off to find a BETTER more FOCUSED self..

Don’t worry I’ll take you with me!

As some of you know I just got back from a fun-filled trip from Vegas and after that I then traveled to Louisiana to promote my book…..I Wish…I actually went to support my friend on her wedding day but I am writting a book its a sci-fi/thriller based losley on DieHard and i’m sure it will be a best seller. But i’m officially back and ready to get back to work. A few of you may have noticed that I’m no longer .wordpress.com! its officially Thesophisticatedsocialite.com. I’d like to thank all the people who read my blog without the 10 of you I’d be nowhere! Hey If you can’t make fun of yourself who can you make fun of!

Today the country was overjoyed when the reigning queen OPRAH herself announced that she was treating America to a free meal! The result? Pandemonium. I went to my local KFC to make good on her promise and found myself in line for over an hour, everyone was waving that darn free meal voucher in the poor cashiers face. I truly though he was going to faint from over-exhaustion, I don’t think his round body ever had to move that fast back and forth so quickly. The line was out the door an I found myself noticing two things:

Not only do we never pass over free stuff but we try to milk it for everything its worth!

I found myself standing behind a pregnant woman with 4 children. Apparently she used up a whole ream printing up these vouchers. She waddles up to the counter and proceeds to tell the cashier that she “wants 25 meals” she lays the vouchers on the counter and waits expectantly for the cashier to make good on her request. I of course am angry because she’s directly in front of me and now I’m going to have to wait for another hour while they get her ridiculous order ready.The portly cashier runs to the back to speak with his manger (who looked exhausted as well) I can hear a heated argument between the two men and watch as the poor cashier runs back to the woman and happily tells her its one per person. She actually had the nerve to gripe about being denied her request and states rather loudly that “Oprah’s buying this for me” and storms off to wait for her 5 meals to be prepared. She apparently was trying to get food for the week! No, make that 2 weeks. Greedy? Definitely! come on now we’ve got to do better than this…..and we can!

So to all my AA’s Lets be respectful of the people in line behind us and remember that they are hungry too and that though we may have printed up hundreds of vouchers lets save some grilled chicken for everyone else…

I think that KFC needs to rethink their strategy a bit because after I ate their new grilled chicken I wanted to go to Popeye’s and get some GOOD chicken…..

Despite the fact that the majority of the people who came were late, it was a lot of fun! It was a full (hot) house. A big thanks goes out to everyone who came as well as Jay my DJ who did his thing. And I’d especially like to thank my friend Stacy who was gracious enough to open her house up to us!

I know this is super mainstream which is something I try to stay away from. I don’t listen to the radio much but this song caught me yesterday as I was waiting at the light. I listen to talk radio in the morning but as I was switching through channels I came across this angel sing this catchy song!  I started bobbing my head to the beat and singing the chorus, which is remarkable since its the first time I heard the song. Apparently anything with a catchy beat and an easy chorus works for me.

Beyonce is just cranking out the hits! This is  a song that just makes you want to dance in your room, at least thats what I do when i’m alone in my room. I know i’m too old for all that but I cant help it when I hear this song…..  Are you ever too old to dance alone in you room? Where have all the blacks gone?

More specifically where have all the dark blacks gone?

I was watching B.E.T yesterday, something I haven’t done for years! Mostly due to the fact that I feel that they are no longer relevant nor are they the voice of African Americans.  They certainly don’t play as much music as they did before and when they do play a video they only play half of it. Now I could go on and on about the sins of B.E.T but what I saw yesterday was not only disconcerting and discouraging but somewhat biased!

I was watching a preview for a new show that they are premiering called “Harlem Heights” at first glance it seemed like another ridiculous reality show that I would more than likely watch with disgust yet tune in every week to see what happens next,but as I watched the promo something struck me, see if you see it too!

Why are all these people light? There are two moderately dark guys on the show but everyone else for the most part is extremely light. I thought that maybe I was just over analyzing things, like I usually do, but after thinking about it I have every reason to be a little upset about this. Would it have killed you B.E.T to put a darker girl on the show? Dark men have always been considered extremely sexy and sensual but dark women have always had a terrible stigma associated with them, always made to seem less desirable.  We’re so influenced by what we see and from what B.E.T airs they seem to make it apparent who and what they prefer.

You may say “Cici don’t make such a big deal out of this its only entertainment!” Are you serious? Entertainment is one of the biggest influences in a young person’s life! Why do you think most women desire to be stick thin? Where do we learn about new styles? New dances?   New fads? That’s right entertainment. So when you show only people of a certain skin tone you’re making it known what YOU think is desirable and what YOU think is sexy.  I am of course not bashing those who are lighter nor is it my aim to cause division among my people. But I just ask that we look and analyze the reason why we’re seeing fewer and fewer darker skinned people on T.V and on a station that professes to be the so called “voice of the black people”! From what I see you know nothing of our likes only what you “Think” will appeal (or sell) to the masses.  Let’s make an honest evaluation of this situation, because from what I see apparently darker skin is not “IN” or sexy, at least not from B.E.T’s standpoint.
